Want a more proper sendoff for your real Christmas tree, rather than just dragging it to the curb?
Take it to the beach and help fight beach erosion. Smith Point Beach in Shirley again this year has started accepting Christmas tree drop-offs.
The discarded trees are stacked along the snow fence line so that they catch wind-blown sand and help build up barrier dunes on the beach. Nutrients from the trees help feed the beach grass.
Trees can be left at the east booth entrance to the campground at Smith Point County Park, from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. Be sure to remove all ornaments, lights and tinsel before dropping a tree off at the beach.
