Yaphank Fuel Cell Park at Brookhaven Landfill is powered up and running

|

Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine announced that the now fully operational Yaphank Fuel Cell Park is the first step toward converting the Brookhaven Landfill into an energy park.

Generating 7.4 megawatts of energy from three SureSource 3000 carbonate fuel cell power plants, the fuel cell park will provide constant reliable electricity to the growing area of the LIPA system in Yaphank and grant 7,500 homes in the area sufficient power, officials said.

“The fuel cells, along with solar fields and harvested methane gas, will repurpose the landfill when it stops accepting waste after 2024 and is capped and closed,” Romaine said. “Our forward-looking plan will establish Brookhaven Town as a municipal leader in alternative energy sources.”

The power generation facility, installed and operated by FuelCell Energy, Inc., covers almost one acre in the southern portion of the landfill.

Hydrogen fuel cells create electricity by combining hydrogen gas and oxygen to form water. That electricity is then used to power the grid.

Hydrogen fuel cells are a sustainable form of energy because electricity, clean water, and warm air are the sole byproducts. Energy is directly converted into electricity without combustion, resulting in no combustion-related pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides.

The project is interconnected to LIPA’s existing transmission system through a new dedicated distribution feeder from the site. PSEG-LI is providing the electrical connection and National Grid will serve natural gas.
