Center Moriches and William Floyd receive national music education honors

|

Center Moriches and William Floyd school districts have been recognized as being among the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation, a national recognition that acknowledges the district’s efforts to make music part of a well-rounded education.

They are among 830 school districts across the United States to receive the designation, given to school communities that demonstrate exceptional commitment and access to music education. It’s the seventh time that William Floyd’s music department has also received the honor.

To qualify for the Best Communities designation, the districts answered detailed questions about graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, funding, support for the music program, and community music-making programs. The responses were verified by school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

Research has shown that music education has cognitive and social skill benefits for children. Studies indicate that after two years of music education, participants show more substantial improvements in how the brain processes speech and reading scores than their less-involved peers.
