The New York State Department of Transportation put the brakes on a plan to add an interchange with eastbound and westbound ramps connecting Sunrise Highway and Barnes Road in Manorville after the proposal met with community opposition at a public meeting last year.
On its website, the DOT said it “will not be proceeding with the proposed NYS Route 27 at Barnes Road Interchange Project.”
It added, however, that a new project, which is being finalized, “will enhance the safety and riding surface of the Barnes Road bridge,” and that more details are to follow soon.
Residents from Moriches, Mastic and Manorville who attended the meeting at the Mastic Fire Department in September quoted in a Newsday story “questioned the need for the ramps and said they would create traffic jams on Barnes Road, a two-lane town street lined with houses and nurseries.”
In the statement on its website, the DOT said, “We wish to thank all those who attended our public information meeting and provided feedback.”
